Meta Under Fire in India Over Instagram Child Safety Concerns

Meta Platforms is facing mounting pressure in India after government officials raised concerns over advertisements linked to child abuse that reportedly appeared on Instagram, intensifying scrutiny of the company’s content moderation practices in one of its largest markets.

Indian authorities are reportedly examining how the advertisements bypassed Instagram’s automated detection systems and human review processes. Officials have warned that platforms operating in the country must comply with local child protection laws and strengthen safeguards designed to protect minors online.

The latest development adds to a series of regulatory disputes between Meta and the Indian government, which has previously challenged the company over data governance, content moderation, and misinformation.

Investigation Focuses on Content Moderation

According to reports, regulators are investigating whether weaknesses in Meta’s moderation systems allowed the advertisements to reach users. Child safety advocates have also questioned whether Instagram’s recommendation algorithms may have increased the visibility of harmful material.

A government spokesperson reportedly described the situation as “unacceptable,” stressing that social media companies have a responsibility to protect children under India’s Information Technology Rules and other child safety regulations.

The investigation comes as governments worldwide continue to tighten oversight of online platforms amid growing concerns about child exploitation, harmful content, and the effectiveness of automated moderation systems.

Meta Faces Fresh Regulatory Pressure

Meta has not publicly responded in detail to the specific allegations. The company has consistently stated that it invests heavily in artificial intelligence and specialist safety teams to detect and remove child exploitation content across its platforms.

Despite those investments, industry observers say moderating billions of posts across multiple languages and regions remains a significant challenge for large social media companies.

India remains one of Meta’s most important growth markets, with hundreds of millions of users across Instagram and WhatsApp. Analysts say renewed regulatory scrutiny could lead to tougher compliance requirements, expanded local moderation teams, and greater transparency around the company’s child safety efforts.

As the investigation progresses, lawmakers, child rights organisations, and parents are expected to closely monitor both the government’s response and Meta’s actions. The case adds to growing global pressure on major technology companies to demonstrate stronger protections for young users while maintaining trust in their platforms.
