OpenAI has officially launched its GPT-5.6 family of artificial intelligence models, making the company’s latest and most powerful systems publicly available after a brief delay requested by the U.S. government.
The release introduces three new models. GPT-5.6 Sol serves as the flagship model focused on advanced reasoning and maximum performance, while GPT-5.6 Terra offers a balance between capability and cost. GPT-5.6 Luna is designed for faster, lower-cost deployments that require high throughput and low latency.
The launch ends a short period of restricted access that began roughly two weeks ago when OpenAI limited availability to a small group of trusted partners following a request from U.S. national security officials. Authorities sought additional time to evaluate the models amid concerns over their potential use in cybersecurity and other high-risk applications.
Stronger Safety Measures Accompany More Powerful Models
OpenAI said GPT-5.6 Sol incorporates its most advanced safety framework to date, with enhanced protections against malicious cyber-related requests, repeated attempts to bypass safeguards, and other high-risk activities.
The company noted that the models underwent extensive red-teaming and security testing before approval for wider deployment. According to OpenAI, the additional evaluation period allowed government officials to complete their review while enabling the company to further strengthen its safety systems.
OpenAI also reiterated that it does not believe government-requested limited previews should become a standard part of future AI releases, adding that it worked closely with U.S. officials throughout the review process before moving ahead with the broader rollout.

GPT-5.6 Sol targets demanding workloads that require sophisticated reasoning and complex problem-solving. Luna focuses on speed and efficiency for large-scale deployments where response times and affordability are priorities.
