Apple Shuts Down Internal Search Project As It Strikes AI Deal With Perplexity

Apple has officially ended its years-long effort to develop a proprietary AI-powered search engine, known internally as Project Pegasus. Instead, the company has signed a strategic agreement with Perplexity, a fast-growing AI search startup, to bring conversational and real-time search capabilities to future Apple devices.

Sources close to the matter confirmed that work on Pegasus was discontinued quietly earlier this fall. While Apple had assembled a dedicated search team and invested heavily in language model infrastructure, executives ultimately decided the effort could not match the pace or scale of innovation occurring outside the company. The pivot comes amid a broader internal shift toward integrating third-party generative AI tools more directly into Apple’s ecosystem.

Perplexity, which has built a reputation for offering AI-driven search with real-time citations and web-sourced accuracy, will become a foundational layer for Apple’s next-generation user experience across Siri, Spotlight, and Safari. According to people familiar with the deal, the integration will begin in mid-2026, timed with the launch of iOS 19 and macOS Sequoia.

The move reflects Apple’s evolving approach to AI, which had previously been marked by a cautious and largely closed development philosophy. Over the past twelve months, however, the company has increased hiring in its machine learning division and accelerated partnerships with smaller but more nimble AI firms. The Perplexity deal is the first major external search alignment Apple has made since its ongoing agreement with Google for default web search on iOS devices.

Apple is also expected to unveil the Apple Silicon M5 chip next spring, which will include a new Neural Engine architecture optimized for real-time inference. Executives see this as critical infrastructure to support generative tasks on-device, particularly for AI-enhanced search and summarization. Developers testing early builds of iOS 19 report that prototype interfaces already show Perplexity branding alongside Apple UI elements.

The partnership is likely to deepen questions around data privacy and user control, long pillars of Apple’s brand. While Perplexity has promised on-device processing and encryption safeguards, privacy advocates will be watching closely as conversational AI becomes embedded more deeply into Apple’s default user flows.

This shift also puts new pressure on Google, which faces increasing challenges to its long-held dominance in mobile search. While Apple has not yet indicated whether it will replace Google as the default search provider, the Perplexity partnership signals that Cupertino is open to a more fragmented and AI-native search future.
