
Samsung used its Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event in San Francisco on February 25 to reposition the Galaxy S line around “agentic” assistance, unveiling the Galaxy S26, S26+, and S26 Ultra alongside new Galaxy Buds4 earbuds. The company’s message was that the next leap in smartphones will come less from headline hardware jumps and more from software that anticipates intent, completes multi step tasks, and does so while tightening privacy controls.
A flagship built around privacy by design
The centerpiece is the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s built in “Privacy Display,” which aims to prevent shoulder surfing by narrowing what nearby people can see from side angles when the feature is activated. Samsung describes this as privacy “at a pixel level,” achieved through integrated display behavior rather than stick on films, and positions it as a foundational feature for an era when on screen activity increasingly includes AI summaries, personal context, and automated actions.
Samsung’s marketing emphasis is matched by a practical change in how it expects people to use their phones in public. The company frames Privacy Display as a daily life feature for commuting and shared spaces, and it explicitly warns that some information may still be visible depending on angle and environment. That caution matters because the S26 Ultra’s broader pitch is that it can take on more tasks on a user’s behalf, which naturally increases the sensitivity of what appears on screen.
Galaxy AI shifts from features to workflow
Samsung is expanding Galaxy AI beyond one off tricks toward continuous workflow assistance. “Now Nudge” is designed to reduce app switching by surfacing contextually relevant actions, such as suggesting the right photos to share when a friend asks, or detecting calendar conflicts when messages reference a meeting. “Now Brief” is positioned as a more proactive feed of reminders tied to personal context, including travel and reservations.
A key strategic move is that Samsung is no longer treating Bixby as the only front door to intelligence. The S26 line integrates multiple agents, including Google Gemini and Perplexity, alongside an upgraded Bixby that Samsung describes as a “conversational device agent” for settings and device control. In Samsung’s own example, a natural language prompt like “My eyes feel tired” can trigger a suggestion to enable eye comfort features, without requiring the user to hunt for the setting name.
Samsung and Google also used the event to signal a broader industry direction: assistants that can complete transactions inside third party apps. Reports from the launch noted that Gemini’s agentic capabilities previewed at Unpacked include actions like booking rideshares and placing delivery orders in supported apps, pushing the phone closer to an execution layer rather than just an information layer.
Cameras and editing lean into “describe what you want”
On imaging, Samsung is coupling hardware continuity with more aggressive AI editing. The company says its upgraded “Photo Assist” lets users describe edits in natural language, including converting a scene from day to night, adding missing parts of objects, and even changing outfits in photos as part of cleaning up personal details. Samsung also highlights a workflow change: edits can be reviewed step by step and adjusted or undone, aiming to make AI editing feel iterative rather than destructive.
Samsung also describes an expanded “Creative Studio” for generating and refining visuals from sketches, photos, or prompts, and it calls out practical scanning improvements like AI powered Document Scan that removes distortions and groups multiple images into a single PDF. Meanwhile, Circle to Search with Google is upgraded with enhanced multi object recognition so users can search multiple items in an image at once.
Hardware story is steady, with targeted upgrades
Samsung says the S26 series is its most powerful Galaxy S line yet, driven by a customized chipset and upgrades to efficiency and thermal management. In its own performance claims, the S26 Ultra sees up to 19 percent CPU improvement, 39 percent NPU improvement, and 24 percent GPU improvement compared with the prior Ultra generation, positioning those gains as the engine for always on AI features.
Samsung’s published specifications also reinforce that “AI phone” does not mean light hardware. The S26 Ultra’s rear camera stack includes a 200 megapixel wide camera, plus telephoto cameras listed at 50 megapixels and 10 megapixels, along with a 12 megapixel front camera. The devices ship with Android 16 and One UI 8.5. Samsung lists Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and Exynos 2600 depending on device and market.
Pricing and release timing reflect supply chain realities
Preorders are live now, with official availability beginning March 11, according to multiple reports. Pricing in the US starts around $900 for the S26 and $1,100 for the S26+, with the S26 Ultra around $1,300.
The base models are also more expensive than last year. Samsung’s Won Joon Choi said the global memory shortage made a significant contribution to the $100 price increase on the S26 and S26+, alongside broader materials costs and tariffs, even as Samsung doubled base storage to 256GB. In other words, the economics of AI era phones are being shaped not only by new features but by component constraints, and Samsung is being unusually direct about that tradeoff.
Galaxy Buds4 join the multi agent ecosystem
Alongside the phones, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Buds4 and Buds4 Pro as earbuds that double as an on ramp to the same agent ecosystem. Samsung says the Buds4 series supports high fidelity 24 bit and 96 kHz audio and includes Auracast support, while company coverage highlights hands free “Head Gestures” for calls and voice commands that can launch agents like Gemini and Perplexity.
Pricing reported by outlets covering the launch puts Buds4 at about $179 and Buds4 Pro at about $249, with availability aligned to the March 11 release window.
What Samsung is really selling
Taken together, the Galaxy S26 announcements show Samsung trying to define the “AI phone” not as a single assistant but as a device level orchestration layer that can hand tasks to multiple agents, draw on personal context, and still keep user data protected in everyday settings. The new Privacy Display is the most literal manifestation of that pitch, but the deeper bet is that phones will increasingly be judged by how few steps it takes to go from intent to completed action, and by how safely that automation can run.
