John Ternus will officially take over as Apple CEO on September 1, 2026, ending Tim Cook’s 15 year tenure at the top of the world’s most valuable technology companies. The leadership transition comes at a critical moment for Apple, with artificial intelligence emerging as the company’s biggest strategic challenge and opportunity. Ternus, Apple’s longtime hardware engineering chief, now faces pressure to accelerate the company’s AI strategy while protecting the hardware ecosystem that has driven Apple’s growth for years.
Apple announced the succession in April after its board unanimously approved the long-planned transition. Cook will become executive chairman of Apple’s board, where he will continue supporting selected company matters, including engagement with policymakers around the world. Tim Cook became Apple CEO in 2011 after Steve Jobs stepped down, and he leaves behind one of the most successful periods in the company’s history. Apple’s market capitalization grew from roughly $350 billion when Cook became CEO to around $4 trillion, while annual revenue increased from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025. The company also expanded its active installed base to more than 2.5 billion devices.
Cook’s tenure also produced major new product categories and services. Apple launched the Apple Watch, AirPods and Apple Vision Pro while expanding businesses such as Apple Music, Apple Pay, iCloud and Apple TV. Ternus brings a very different background to the CEO position. He joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and rose through the hardware engineering organization before becoming senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021. During his 25 years at Apple, he has overseen hardware engineering across the company’s major product categories, including the iPhone.
His engineering background could shape Apple’s next phase around tightly integrated hardware and artificial intelligence. Rather than treating AI as an isolated software feature, Ternus has emphasized Apple’s traditional approach of using technology to create products and experiences that consumers can easily understand. That philosophy could become important as Apple attempts to make AI more useful across the iPhone, Mac, AirPods and future devices.
AI Becomes John Ternus’ Biggest Challenge
Artificial intelligence represents the biggest strategic test awaiting the new Apple CEO. Apple introduced Apple Intelligence in 2024, but its AI ambitions have faced criticism as competitors rapidly advanced generative AI assistants, AI agents and large language models. Siri in particular has struggled to match the capabilities demonstrated by products such as ChatGPT and Claude.
For Ternus, the challenge goes beyond improving Siri. Bloomberg reports that Ternus is entering the CEO role with an unusually ambitious hardware pipeline, including Apple’s first foldable iPhone and a smart display designed to recognize speakers and personalize content. Other projects reportedly include future AirPods with cameras capable of interpreting their surroundings. These products could provide Apple with new platforms for embedding AI directly into everyday hardware.
The timing gives Ternus little room for a slow start. Apple has scheduled its major iPhone launch event for September 9, only eight days after he becomes CEO. The event is expected to introduce the latest iPhone lineup and could feature Apple’s first foldable iPhone, giving Ternus an immediate opportunity to establish his leadership in front of consumers and investors.
Ternus Faces Apple’s Next Big Test
The new Apple CEO will also inherit challenges beyond AI. Apple remains heavily dependent on complex global supply chains, particularly its manufacturing relationship with China, while Washington continues to pressure the company over overseas production. Cook spent years managing those relationships, and Ternus will need to develop his own approach to Apple’s geopolitical and regulatory challenges.
At the same time, Ternus must maintain Apple’s momentum across the iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, AirPods and services while finding the next major growth opportunity. The company has already demonstrated that it can create enormous businesses around hardware and services, but the AI revolution could fundamentally change how consumers interact with technology.
Tim Cook will not completely disappear from Apple after September 1. As executive chairman, he will remain connected to the company and is expected to assist with certain responsibilities, particularly policymaker engagement. That arrangement gives Ternus access to Cook’s experience while allowing the new CEO to establish his own leadership style and strategic priorities.
