Elon Musk Plans $1 Tipping Feature on X Money

Elon Musk has announced plans to introduce a new payment feature on X that will allow users to send $1 to another person by pressing and holding the Like button. The proposed feature will integrate X Money, the platform’s financial services product, directly into the social media experience, giving users a simple way to tip content creators and reward posts they appreciate without leaving the app.

Musk revealed the plan on October 25, 2026, in a post on X, where he wrote, “We’re adding long press on like to send someone $1 via ???? Money.” The announcement highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to combine social networking, digital payments and financial services within a single platform. However, X has not yet announced a confirmed release date or disclosed all the technical details behind the proposed feature.

The new functionality could change how users support creators on X by turning a familiar social interaction into a potential financial transaction. Rather than opening a separate payment application, navigating to a creator’s profile or searching for payment details, users could initiate a small payment directly from the Like button.

The proposal also reflects Musk’s broader ambition to transform X, formerly known as Twitter, into an all-in-one digital platform that brings together conversations, content creation, messaging and financial transactions. If implemented successfully, the feature could make everyday interactions on X more valuable for both creators and their audiences.

How X Money Could Turn Likes Into Payments

Under the proposed system, users would press and hold the Like button on a post to send its author $1 through X Money. The feature would build a payment option into an interaction that millions of social media users already understand, potentially lowering the barriers to tipping and encouraging more people to support online creators financially.

The concept could prove particularly useful for independent journalists, digital publishers, influencers, commentators and other creators who rely on social media to reach audiences. Users who appreciate a post could show their support through a direct payment instead of relying exclusively on likes, reposts, comments or subscriptions.

For creators, even small contributions could become a supplementary revenue stream if a large number of followers adopt the feature. A straightforward tipping mechanism could also encourage users to reward informative posts, original reporting, entertaining content and useful discussions as they encounter them in their feeds.

However, several important questions remain unanswered. X has not confirmed whether users will eventually be able to select payment amounts other than $1, whether the feature will include transaction limits or what eligibility requirements will apply. The company has also yet to provide a public rollout schedule for the proposed long press payment option.

The design will also need to distinguish a deliberate payment from an ordinary interaction. Because users frequently tap Like buttons while scrolling, X will need to make the payment process clear enough to prevent accidental transfers and help users understand when they are authorising a financial transaction.

X Money Expands Musk’s Everything App Ambitions

The proposed tipping feature builds on X’s wider push into financial services through X Money. The service launched in the United States in 2026 and offers peer to peer money transfers alongside an X branded Visa debit card. Access to the service and its individual features depends on eligibility requirements, while its initial rollout has focused on the US market.

By integrating payments into everyday social interactions, X could create more reasons for users to keep their financial activity within its ecosystem. The strategy follows Musk’s long standing ambition to build an everything app that combines communication, social networking and payments in a single digital environment.

The approach could also create new opportunities for X to strengthen its creator economy. Social platforms compete for creators by offering advertising revenue, paid subscriptions, audience engagement tools and other monetisation options. A built in tipping feature would give creators another potential way to earn money directly from their followers.

Nevertheless, the success of the proposed $1 payment feature will depend on more than convenience. Users will need to trust the platform’s payment infrastructure, understand any applicable fees and feel confident that their money will reach the intended recipient. X will also need to address regulatory requirements, account security and payment disputes as it expands its financial services.

International availability represents another significant consideration. Although X Money has established a presence in the United States, the company has not announced a confirmed launch date for the new tipping feature in other markets. Users outside the US should therefore avoid assuming that they will immediately gain access to the service when the feature arrives.

For now, Musk’s announcement signals another step in X’s transformation from a social media platform into a broader digital services business. If the company delivers the feature with clear safeguards and a smooth payment experience, the ability to send money through a Like button could make creator support a more natural part of everyday online conversations.

The next major milestone will be an official product rollout with clearer information about availability, payment controls and eligibility. Until X provides those details, the long-press tipping feature remains a planned addition rather than a fully documented service available to every user.
